Sumatra Earthquake, September 2009 - High paced activity during first few days

06 Oct 2009

A MapAction team assembled in Sumatra. Three team members flew into Padang via Jakarta on Saturday afternoon where they met up with the fourth member of the team, who had flown in from Manila. A field base was established in Padang and initial base maps produced. “There have been many offers of data and requests for maps. I have not experienced this much frantic activity since the Kashmir earthquake in 2005”, said Nigel Woof. Jonathan Douch has been on assessments with Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams, whilst maps are produced from the situational reports that have been received. Sporadic comms and limited bandwidth have caused delays to map uploads to the website but paper copies are being distributed to all those who need them.
