On 8th October 2005 a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Kashmir caused devastation over a wide area and killed around 80,000 people. A MapAction team deployed to the region within 48 hours and provided a rapid mapping service, prior to the establishment of a Humanitarian Information Centre by UN OCHA.
