Project HARMLESS, researching and promoting the use of next-generation satellite navigation technologies for humanitarian and emergency uses, has reached its first major milestone. The project, in which MapAction is a consortium partner, has completed its Critical Analysis phase, with a report recently issued.
HARMLESS is evaluating new applications of global navigational satellite systems (GNSS), notably the planned European GALILEO system, that have potential to enhance existing GPS-based services. MapAction's consultative role during the first phase is expected to expand to the provision of a platform for field concept demonstrations during 2007-08.
MapAction's project leader, Toby Wicks, commented: "We're pleased to be applying our understanding and experience of humanitarian emergencies to the development of such technologies".
