Anne Frankland of MapAction travels to South Sudan in August to start a six-month contract with the UN Joint Logistics Centre. Anne will be replacing Nick McWilliam, also of MapAction, who has been in Sudan since early 2007. The post is based in Juba, and involves building local capacity for mapping transport routes across southern Sudan.
Anne has been a volunteer member of the MapAction team for the past two years, while her day-to-day employment has been with the GIS software company ESRI UK. With MapAction, she has taken part in emergency missions to the Pakistan earthquake in 2005, the Java earthquake in 2006, and disaster management training work in Tajikistan.
Anne commented: “I am sad to leave ESRI UK after six very enjoyable, rewarding years, but I am delighted to be able to devote more time to humanitarian projects and build on my MapAction volunteer experience . I am looking forward to the new challenge in Sudan.”
