For the past 4 years MapAction has worked at the front end in the world's most horrific disasters including the Asian tsunami and the Kashmir earthquake. We have played a vital role in saving lives and helping to bring hope quickly to shattered communities.

When relief charities arrive, MapAction provides them with accurate, up-to-date maps showing the locations of groups of affected people, passable routes, which medical facilities are functioning, and much more vital information.

The fact that relief agencies can 'hit the ground running' and make decisions based on accurate data presented in an intelligible way, can only help to save lives and reduce suffering.

How do we do it? 

Using a combination of techniques including satellite imagery, global positioning system (GPS), geographical information systems (GIS), and by observation on the ground, MapAction produces maps in the field and provides them to relief agencies on the spot. The maps are also distributed globally via the web.

Maps are updated hour by hour as new information becomes available. This means gaps in response can be spotted and vital assistance - shelter, medicines, water and food - can be delivered with minimum delay to the most needy communities across a wide area.

How can YOU help?

We are a relatively small charity among the big relief agencies in disaster response. But we deliver a big impact.

As our charity expands we have a constant need for funds to ensure that the we can equip, train and deploy our volunteers (most of whom donate their time free of charge) when disaster strikes.
