In November 2006, El Nino-driven heavy rains flooded much of eastern Kenya. This created severe disease impacts and halted vital ongoing supplementary food aid programmes. Between 500,000 and 700,000 people were affected.
On 30 November, MapAction responded to a request by the United Nations to deploy a team to Kenya. We conducted capacity-strengthening work for the Kenyan Government's National Disaster Operations Centre in Nairobi, and provided field-based coordination and information management services, including mapping, to humanitarian agencies and NGOs in eastern Kenya.
