A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck 25 km SSW of Yogyakarta, near the southern coast of central Java, the most populated island in the Indonesian archipelago on Friday 26 May 2006. Aside from 6,000 deaths, 2.7 million people were affected by the disaster.
The emergency was compounded two weeks later by the threatened eruption of the volcano Mount Merapi.
A MapAction team was deployed to Indonesia to assist the United Nations. They produced situation maps for international agencies and NGOs, and evacuation planning maps to mitigate the risks of the predicted volcanic eruption.
