Tajikistan in central Asia is prone to a range of natural hazards including earthquakes, landslides and floods. Also, poverty results in high vulnerability to these hazards.
MapAction conducted two capacity-building visits to Tajikistan, culminating in a training mission in August 2006. Outcomes included the training of 30 personnel from several national agencies and organisations in the use of GIS and GPS for disaster risk reduction and response.
This successful mission followed a similar training initiative in Liberia that focused on health mapping. In 2007 we will be conducting further short missions aimed at transferring skills and strengthening national-level capacities in the use of MapAction's tools and methodologies for applying geo-technologies in humanitarian applications.
