Suriname 2006 PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 December 2006

suriname_flooding_240x160Persistent, heavy rain caused extensive flooding in the lower reaches of several major rivers in Suriname in early May 2006. It was estimated that the flooding affected 30,000 people, mainly living in settlements along rivers in the interior rain forest.

MapAction deployed a team to work alongside the UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) group in the capital, Paramaribo. Our maps, updated daily, were used to plan airlift of urgent relief supplies into the interior.

We also conducted aerial GPS surveys of affected areas to chart the flooding situation following successive bouts of new rain in upper reaches of the river catchment.
