Alex departed Heathrow today to join Anne and will arrive in Yogyakarta at 1500 local time tomorrow (0900 UK time).
The UN office was just being set up yesterday and so when Anne arrived
people were still busy moving desks. Anne has her desk and printer set
up now, although she had some difficulty setting up the RBGAN
(satellite Comms) to connect to the internet. There was some discussion
yesterday with the UK Base and fortunately it is now working well.
The UN GIS specialists in Yogyakarta are presently working on a 'who
what where' map and Anne has received some administration and transport
data from the Indonesian government, which she is now working on. The
aim is to create a suite of 9 administrative maps showing detail down
to village level for the 5 affected disctricts, for OCHA. These will be
taken out by field teams to assess damage at the village level. MSF,
the Japanese Disaster Response Team and Terre des Hommes Italia have
also requested maps, so the task list is growing.
As mentioned yesterday the Indonesian Government has a planning
department with a GIS section and Daush and Anne will visit them
tomorrow to see whether it would be better to re-locate with them.
Apparently they have a plotter and another A3 printer and their
infrastructure may be better.
The requirement for mapped information is building and the first maps will soon become available through our website.
