Anne and Alex are both very busy producing maps to assist in the
aftermath of the earthquake, but the threat of a Mt Merapi eruption
remains a real problem for all.
The hotel room where Alex spent his first night in Yogyakarta had been
damaged by the earthquake and in his room there was a large crack
running from door to window, but nevertheless there remained an air of
calm that was present in both staff and guests. Apparently the damage
in the lobby was more severe but generally damage across the city is
sporadic and already repair work is underway in all areas that the team
has seen.
Although the effects of the earthquake are severe the story about Mt
Merapi continues to be at the centre of the news and yesterday a ridge
collapsed causing a further evacuation of about 8,000 people from an
area adjacent to the mountain.
Map production continues and the team has produced and printed maps for
WFP, OCHA, CISAR, IFRC, Relief International, Japan International
Relief Cooperation Agency, MSF and numerous others.
Overall it has been a busy couple of days with map production getting
into full swing, but also Anne and Alex are monitoring very carefully
the activities of Mt Merapi.
